YES IT”S TRUE, WE ALL LOVE THE VW CAMPERVAN. IT IS A REAL CLASSIC – BUT WHY?

Is it the vehicle, or is it the image that made us fall in love with the Kombi van?  To be honest, it’s probably a bit of both.

The VW Samba’s history dates back to post-war Europe, when in 1948 VW developed the Beetle into a van. It was known as the Type 1, and it’s oddball van older brother became known as the Type 2.

The van was simple and aerodynamic, but above all else it was reliable. It came to be used for numerous purposes, such as a delivery van, a milk-float and, you guessed it, a campervan.

Formerly it had a “split” window, but for its purpose as a camper van, its look was adapted to include the more “bay” type window, although many feel that this took away some of the character. It’s engine size was also increased, and the VW van of the ‘70s became not only even more reliable, but also considerably faster.

Because of it’s reliability and speed making it capable of covering large distances relatively quickly, VW launched a campaign that rewarded gold watches to van owners that exceeded 100,000 miles – apparently roughly 160,000 watches were given out.

But could reliability explain its past and current popularity?

Maybe partly, but it’s popularity has been associated with the hippy’s of the 60s and 70s, and more recently with surfers. Even more recently, the Kombi van has been used in “clamping”, referring to a new generation of campers originating on Instagram who insist camping and luxury do not have to be mutually exclusive, and love to document their “clamping” adventures to their followers.

But, the VW campervan is much more than a “cult” thing. It spans multiple generations. People from all different generations consider it a classic vehicle. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a couple in there 60’s cruising round in there personalised VW camper. There are versions in all sorts of colour combinations on the road, and part of the VW camper culture is personalising your own camper to your hearts content, no original “purists” here.

Because of this culture around the vehicle, and because it is such an icon, there are many VW campervan businesses. You can hire them for holidays, or even weddings. And obviously, there are many interested in buying a VW camper, so there are plenty who make money by restoring and selling this classic vehicle. Because of the custom-culture around the car, there are also many businesses who do one-offs, personalised or completely custom models, variations or entire interior renovations for the VW camper.

Recently, I was chatting to a friend about a successful and fairly wealthy couple who had gone on a two week camping trip in VW campervan. My friend just could not wrap his head around why they would choose to set off in an old, rickety, difficult-to-drive VW van, rather than buying or renting a modern, much warmer, comfier and better-equipped campervan. I suppose that it was the logical point of view.

He just didn’t get the appeal, or simply put, the “coolness” of the old VW. And thats the point of this rambling. It’s not the comfiest, not the most modern, extremely lacking in features, I could go on and on with reasons not to like it. And yet, the VW camper is without a doubt the most original, collectable and simply the coolest campervan on the road. It is an absolute classic and bonafide icon, and best represents the idea of the campervan – freedom!
